Book Review: Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

Lola and the Boy Next DoorLola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
Companion Novel: Anna and the French Kiss
Release Date:  September 29th 2011
Publisher: Dutton
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 338
Overall:
Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion . . . she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit -- more sparkly, more fun, more wild -- the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.

When Cricket -- a gifted inventor -- steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

My Thoughts:

Perkins does it AGAIN! Ah, Lola and Cricket...A modern retelling of Pretty in Pink(but Duckie is chosen this time!)

I’m not going to lie I had HIGH expectations...It even crossed my mind that Lola wasn't as good as Anna. But then I was like, “hold up! why are you comparing?!” they’re two different...every!Then I was like “yeah! Lola was just as awesome!”

Mistakes were made and lessons were learned with Lola and Cricket. I’m so happy about the way things ended. It couldn’t have been better. I have to admit Lola made me a little bit angry. Really, just a little bit because even I understood her anger towards Cricket. She felt like Cricket just left her high and dry...so I was like hmmm Cricket: good or bad? I thought Max was a good guy...but then he just turned into a total douche, but maybe he was already one. So...Cricket is a good guy! He’s extremely nice, gentle, charming, understanding...(reminded me of Duckie!) Is there really a guy like this? Like really. Perkins...well done. I am yet again swept away by your characters, story telling, and writing!

...and yes, Anna and St Clair are in this one! I cannot wait for Isla and the Happily Ever After! It's the final companion to Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door, [dramatic sigh.] I'm getting sad just thinking about it!

Maybe I’ll just read Anna and Lola all over again! If you haven’t read these two books yet,  then you should, STAT!

"Waiting on Wednesday" (66)

ShiftShift

by
Shift is a sinister YA psychological thriller that tears through the themes of identity, loss and toxic friendship. Olive Corbett is definitely not crazy. Not anymore.  These days she takes her meds like a good girl, hangs out with her best friend Ami, and stays the hell away from the toxic girls she used to be friends with. She doesn't need a boyfriend. Especially not a lifesaver-type with a nice smile. And she doesn't need the drama of that creepy new girl Miranda, who has somehow latched on to Olive's ex-best friend. Yet from a distance, Olive can see there's something sinister about the new friendship. Something almost...parasitic. Maybe the wild rumours are true. Maybe Miranda is a killer. But who would believe Olive? She does have a habit of letting her imagination run away with her...
