Book Review: Virtuosity by Jessica Martinez

VirtuosityVirtuosity by Jessica Martinez
Release Date: October 18th 2011
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 304
Overall: ½
Now is not the time for Carmen to fall in love. And Jeremy is hands-down the wrong guy for her to fall for. He is infuriating, arrogant, and the only person who can stand in the way of Carmen getting the one thing she wants most: to win the prestigious Guarneri competition. Carmen's whole life is violin, and until she met Jeremy, her whole focus was winning. But what if Jeremy isn't just hot...what if Jeremy is better?

Carmen knows that kissing Jeremy can't end well, but she just can't stay away. Nobody else understands her--and riles her up--like he does. Still, she can't trust him with her biggest secret: She is so desperate to win she takes anti-anxiety drugs to perform, and what started as an easy fix has become a hungry addiction. Carmen is sick of not feeling anything on stage and even more sick of always doing what she's told, doing what's expected.

Sometimes, being on top just means you have a long way to fall....
My Thoughts:

Let me start off by saying that Martinez’s writing was amazing. She puts a new spin on contemporary YA, based around music, which was very genuine and alluring.

Carmen cuts right down to the core. She captures the ascents of main protag Mia, from If I Stay, a little bit. In a lot of ways Carmen and Mia are a like. Their love for music was so...real, inspiring, and passionate. I just wish that Martinez explored a little more of Carmen’s Ideral addiction, but I think that adds to her character. She discovers that she's strong, independent, vulnerable girl. I just took it as something she had to do on her own and by herself. All her life she been the best, then she “meets” Jeremy. He awakens her...he shares with her about how he feels alive when he’s onstage performing. Like he’s flying. Something Carmen hasn’t felt in while since she started taking Inderal(it numbs her.) Carmen realizes that her addiction is destroying her and her love for music...the heartbreaking part is that her mother is in on it too.

Jeremy, I have mixed feeling about him. His relationship with Carmen... it always felt a little guarded. Music and competition talk was a very touchy subject for them. They tried not spoil to let it everything, but it’s still there.

Martinez leaves a lot to be desired, like with Carmen’s relationship with her mother Diana, if she went on to Julliard. I just want an update, you know. I feel like their stories are not yet over. I’m hoping to see them again!(which would be awesome, because these characters a freakin haunting me! lol)

Gorgeous paperback copy, it's EXACTLY how I picture Carmen to look like!

Book Review: The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa

The Iron Knight (Iron Fey, #4)
The Iron Knight  by Julie Kagawa
Series: Iron Fey #4
Release Date: October 25th 2011
Publisher:  HarlequinTEEN
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 386
Overall:
My name—my True Name—is Ashallayn'darkmyr Tallyn.

I am the last remaining son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. And I am dead to her.

My fall began, as many stories do, with a girl…

My Thoughts:

Aw the long awaited The Iron Knight...This series is one of those series that will never end for me! It holds a special place in my heart along with the Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and of course, Perfect Chemistry.

Kagawa swept us all off our feet with The Iron Daughter, a world full of beauty and danger. Let’s not forget about those long (and I mean long, battles about #TeamASH and #TeamPuck!) I’ve been going back and forth with this decision myself, and yes it’s safe to say I AM OFFICIALLY TEAM ASH! Lol Ash’s POV was very much needed, I was not disappointed. I didn’t mind stepping away from Meghan Chase, either way she’s a big part of Ash’s life. His journey with her has really…changed him. After reading The Iron Queen and now The Iron Knight I can now say I really know him, like down to core. The characters we all fell in love with are better then ever(Puck)!

I can’t tell you everything without spoiling it!(I’m so tempted!) I’m getting butterflies just thinking about it. This has to be the best in the series! Full of love, Loss, Honesty…all wrapped up in one awesome, epic closing to The Iron Fey series. Read IT! ;) I loved every minute of it.

FYI: Julie Kagawa is working on a spin-off series to the Iron Fey featuring an older Ethan, Meghan's younger brother, as the protagonist.

Book Review: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Anna and the French KissAnna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Companion Novel: Lola and the Boy Next Door
Release Date: December 2010
Publisher: Dutton
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 372
Overall:
Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris - until she meets Etienne St. Clair: perfect, Parisian (and English and American, which makes for a swoon-worthy accent), and utterly irresistible. The only problem is that he's taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of her almost-relationship back home.

As winter melts into spring, will a year of romantic near - misses end with the French kiss Anna - and readers - have long awaited?

My Thoughts:

Anna and the French Kiss...[insert squee here]

Loved this book, seriously READ IT! Stephanie Perkins is up there with my  favorite contemporary(love story) authors: Simone Elkeles, Jennifer Echols , and Lauren Barnholdt.

I need to fan myself because I just fall in love. Perkins writing is superb... I’ve read a lot of romance-ish/chick lit novels and none of them make me want to cry, smile, laugh all at the same time. I felt like Perkins understands what us girls go through! That's what makes Anna so relatable. I mean how many of you have liked a guy/girl you can’t have? And the fact that Anna gets her knight in shining armor...puts a smile on my face. And Etienne St. Claire, I need to find a guy like him(Cricket Bell too). I don’t know if it’s the European Shrug or something, but he had me at “Bonjour”. Perskin’s characters are flawless, admirable and genuine.

If your looking for an all around awesome book, then read Anna. I cannot stress it you you enough. You’d be goshing over for days!

    Masque of the Red Death
    Masque of the Red Death
    by
Death is impossible and living is impossibly hard for seventeen-year-old Araby Worth in Bethany Griffin‘s The Masque of the Red Death, a sexy, post-Apocalyptic reimagining of Poe’s gothic horror story of the same name. The year is 1870 and a deadly virus has decimated the population of North America. Masked corpse-collectors travel the streets, removing the bodies before the contagion can spread. Though Araby tries to escape it all with drugs and parties, even at her most intoxicated she can’t forget her brother’s death-or her guilt for causing it. But things begin to change when William, the fascinating proprietor of the club where she searches for oblivion, and Elliott, nephew of the insane dictator, enter her life. One wants her heart, the other her name. Convinced that he has won over his uncle’s army, Elliott believes that having Araby on his arm will charm the populace into supporting a new government. After all, her father is the inventor of the mask which prevents the spread of the plague-for those who can afford it. In return, Araby asks that he make protective masks available to all citizens, which could save the lives of Will’s young siblings, whom she has come to care about. But nothing is what it seems. A new contagion called the Red Death is sweeping the city. The revelation that Araby’s father may have created the new virus in his laboratory puts Araby’s life in danger. The mob wants her. The rebels want her. And both boys want her. In this two-book series, what and who Araby chooses may just decide the fate of humanity

Interview with Michael Griffo (author of Unwelcome) blog tour

    Unwelcome (Archangel Academy #2)

    Unwelcome

    August 30th 2011
    by Kensington

Archangel Academy is more than a school to Michael Howard. Within its majestic buildings and serene English grounds, he's found friends, new love, and a place that feels more like home than Nebraska ever did. But the most important gift of Archangel Academy is immortality. . .
Life as a just-made vampire is challenging for Michael, even with Ronan, an experienced vamp, to guide him. Michael's abilities are still raw and unpredictable. To add to the turmoil, the ancient feud between rival vampire species is sending ripples of discord through the school. And beneath the new headmaster's charismatic front lies a powerful and very personal agenda.
Yet the mysteries lurking around the Academy pale in comparison to the secrets emerging from Michael's past. And choosing the wrong person to trust—or to love—could lead to an eternity of regret. . .

Hi Michael! I love that Archangel Academy series is LGBT with a paranormal twist! So what was your favorite book growing up as a teen?

My favorite book was A Separate Peace. It isn’t openly LGBT, but as a gay teen I infused it with my own subtext. I’m not 100% certain what type of relationship Phineas and Gene truly had, but regardless of what you brought to it as a reader, their connection was deep and intimate. It was the first book I read of its kind and it made an incredible impression on me. I remember that it was on our summer reading list and I was so excited when school started because I thought we’d get to spend weeks dissecting the novel and talking about the characters. But no! We studied The Red Badge of Courage instead! Another great novel, but nowhere near as exciting as A Separate Peace was for me.

When I started writing the Archangel Academy series I was so thrilled to be able to create a full, honest, and loving relationship between Michael and Ronan. It was incredibly satisfying to do and hopefully incredibly satisfying to read.

Do you think you'll always want to write stories that have supernatural elements? Why or why not?

As much as I love infusing my stories with supernatural elements, I think as a writer the only way to grow is to experiment. So the answer has to be no, but with the disclaimer that I still plan to write many, many books that contain a supernatural element.

I’ve always been intrigued with the supernatural whether it be Dark Shadows or Anne Rice novels or Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, it’s a part of my make-up and what I find interesting in the world of fantasy and fiction so from that standpoint, yes, I’ll always try to create stories that have a supernatural element to them. And hopefully my creative juices will be working overtime so those elements will be unique and fascinating!

What do you think separates Archangel Academy series from all the other supernatural/paranormal reads out there?

The main reason is that the protagonist is a teenage boy who happens to be gay. I have to admit that I haven’t read every YA paranormal book out there, but from the research I’ve done and the feedback I’ve received the Archangel Academy series – UNNATURAL, UNWELCOME, and UNAFRAD – are unique in that they revolve around a gay teenager. Not only that, but he has a boyfriend. He’s in a committed relationship. What Michael and Ronan share isn’t wishy-washy,, it isn’t on again/off again, it’s a real, honest relationship. Including that in the story was important to me because growing up as a gay teenager there were no books like that around. I couldn’t lose myself in a story that would have made a deep, long-lasting impression on me and made me feel as if I wasn’t alone.

The story is also not just about vampires or supernatural creatures, it’s about Michael coming to terms with his own homosexuality and becoming a man. I think this is an element that makes the storyline a bit deeper than most and one that any reader – gay or straight – can identify with. All teenagers have to come to grips with who they are – warts and all – in order to become confident and powerful adults.

If you could be any supernatural creature, What would it be and why?

I would love to have the ability to stop time, that would be incredibly cool. Thanks to technology the world is getting faster and faster and we’re expected to do so many more things in a day than just a few years ago that I really wish I could raise my hand and call a time out. Just be able to make time stop moving forward so I could take a deep breath, read all the books that I’ve been meaning to read, write a novel without having any interruptions, and just relaxing. I would call myself The Timekeeper and probably have a very long cape too!!

Which of your supporting characters from your books needs their own novella?

Oh wow! That’s a hard question to answer – can’t I just say all of them? If I have to choose I think the first person would be Phaedra because she’s such an original creation and I’ve only touched upon what she truly is and what it really means to be an efemera. I think there’s a lot of material to explore there.

I also have a great fondness for Edwige because she’s very complicated. She’s Ronan, Ciaran, and Saoirse’s mother, but she’s so not maternal. I think it would be fun to see her as a young woman when she was dating Saxon and the situations they found themselves in as teenagers. I know for a fact that she was quite a handful – there’s a reason Saoirse’s a a spitfire.

And I would also have to include Nakano as being worthy of his own short story. We don’t really know much about his life before he came to Double A and his actions are often self-defeating, he really is his own worst enemy. I will let you in on a secret and let you know that he goes on one amazing journey in UNAFRAID and we really get to see what lies at the core of his character, but I would definitely like to tell his story from before he was introduced to the series.
