Ghosts and Wraiths

By
Young Adult author, Sherry Soule

You hear heavy footsteps in the upstairs hallway when you know no one is up there. Doors
slam unaccountably. Commonly used items disappear and reappear without cause. The
kitchen light turns on by itself. There's the unmistakable scent of a strange perfume in the
air…

These may be indications that your house is haunted by a ghost. Ghosts might be
considered to be the life force that remains after a person or an animal loses its physical
existence. The ability to perceive this disembodied soul is considered by some to be a gift
(or curse) of Sight or other sense. Like being a Ghost Whisperer.

Individuals who describe themselves as mediums claim they have the ability to perceive
incorporeal beings and even interact with them. Clairvoyants are able to communicate with
apparitions and act as translators for those who cannot perceive the spirit world.

I’ve always had a morbid fascination with haunted houses. I love all things supernatural,
and I knew the fiction market was flooded with vampires, fairies, and werewolves, so I
decided to make the heroine of my debut novel a sassy witch who works in a haunted house
filled with lost souls.

The story ARC took a different twist once I decided to add a wraith to the plot. The word
wraith, marked by the Oxford English Dictionary as being of obscure origin, is first attested
in 1513, with the meaning of ghost or specter (that is, an apparition of a living or once-
living being, possibly as a portent of death). In 18th century Scotland, it was applied to
water spirits, and in England, it became used in a metaphoric sense to refer to wraith-like
things, and to portents in general.

It is thought that by seeing a wraith it is an omen of another person's imminent death.

In my novel, BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN the Ravenhurst Manor is a Gothic mansion overflowing
with lost souls. Nearly, twenty people have vanished in the confusing labyrinthine halls of
this haunted house.

What are vengeful ghosts aka wraiths?

Vengeance is a powerful motive for a ghost to hang around after death. The vengeful ghost
becomes wrathful at some treachery done him or her. They become a wraith. They are
extremely dangerous. Perhaps the wraith is the victim of villainy so the wraith haunts a
specific location in hopes of revealing the nefarious plot against him or her.

If we assume that ghosts are the life force released from a dead person or animal, and
we assume the integrity of the law of conservation of energy, must we believe in ghosts?
That is a more complicated question. There are two possibilities. First, ghosts are the
intact spiritual manifestation of the dead. Psychics and paranormals can perceive them or
communicate with them while these entities remain in the physical plane. Some sightings
of ghostly images might in fact support the idea of a process whereby departed souls or life
force released after death achieves cosmic entropy. Let's begin by investigating the most
common types of ghosts and then hypothesize our own theory.

 Beautifully Broken

Thirteenth Daughter. Heritage Witch. Demon Slayer.
They say every town has its secrets, but that doesn’t even begin to describe Whispering Pines. The townsfolk are a superstitious lot and the mystical disappearance of a local teen has everyone murmuring about a centuries old witch’s curse.
Sixteen-year-old Shiloh Ravenwolf is a heritage witch from the Broussard family, a family both destined and cursed. When she takes a summer job at Ravenhurst Manor, she discovers a ghost with an agenda. That’s where she meets the new town hottie, Trent Donovan, and immediately becomes spellbound by his charms.
Finally, Shiloh's met someone who is supercute and totally into her, but Trent may be the next victim on the supernatural hit list. And Shiloh is the only person with the power to save him. Complicated much?
It sucks to have a destiny, especially since Shiloh would rather spend her summer being a normal girl who worries about clothes and boys, not the supernatural. But she’s never been normal and the stranger things become the more her own magical senses awaken.
With cryptic messages from a pesky wraith, she will begin to understand the mysterious significance of the strange mark branded on her wrist and decide how much she's willing to sacrifice to protect the other teenagers in town.
Unfortunately, for Shiloh, not all ghosts want help crossing over. Some want vengeance.
