Mini Review: The Poison Eaters

The Poison Eaters by Holly Black: Book CoverThe Poison Eaters:and Other Stories by Holly Black
Release Date: Feb 2010
Publisher: Big Mouth House
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages:224
My Rating/Overall:
Source: LibraryThing Early Reviewers

Synopsis
In her debut collection, New York Times best-selling author Holly Black returns to the world of Tithe in two darkly exquisite new tales. Then Black takes readers on a tour of a faerie market and introduces a girl poisonous to the touch and another who challenges the devil to a competitive eating match. These stories have been published in anthologies such as 21 Proms, The Faery Reel, and The Restless Dead, and have been reprinted in many “Best of” anthologies. The Poison Eaters is Holly Black’s much-anticipated first collection of stories, and her ability to stare into the void—and to find humanity and humor there—will speak to young adult and adult readers alike.

Holly Black is the author of Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale (an ALA Best Book for Young Adults) and two related novels, Valiant (an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, an ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers, CCBC Choices) and Ironside, as well as a new novel, The White Cat. She and Tony DiTerlizzi created the best-selling Spiderwick Chronicles. She is working on a graphic novel series, The Good Neighbors, with artist Ted Naifeh. She and her husband, Theo, live in Massachusetts.

The Short of It:I don’t usually like to review anthologies, mainly because I like the depth in stories but I've ALWAYS loved Holly Blacks writing. This book is *wicked lovely* i really enjoyed the way Holly played with the different roles of characters. I seriously think that all these stories need a book.My faves were "Paper Cuts Scissors," "The Dog King," and "The Coldest Girl in Coldtown."I'm little sad because this is ARC, two stories are missing (The Boy Who Cried Wolf and Untitled [A Modern Faerie Tale Story:])

Holly's the black widow of words, She does an amazing weaving life into her stories, you can't help but get sucked right in.<3 Holly Black

The Knight Angels (Book 1: Book of Love) The Knight Angels
 by Abra Ebner

When seventeen-year-old Jane Taylor witnessed her father's death at age seven, something happened to her. Ever since, her thoughts have been consumed by death, going so far as to foresee the ever-changing deaths of those around her.

Sixteen-year-old Emily Taylor always resented her sister’s closeness with their father, who died when she was only six. Ever since she can remember, she’s had the strange ability to read minds, something her father held the key to. Left helpless, she drowns herself in a world of prescription drugs, sending her responsible older sister Jane – who acted as the mother her real mother refused to be – over the edge.

Seventeen-year-old Wes Green was adopted as a baby, left carelessly by parents that clearly did not love him. He moved in next door to Jane, sharing an alleyway window and finding in her a childhood friend that soon turned into his high-school crush. All summer, though, the pain that’s been wracking his body seemed to come with no explanation. He was done growing, was plenty healthy, and worked out regularly as a member of the wrestling team. When senior year starts, though, and the pain gets worse, the changes ahead of him are anything but what he expected, and far to animal for his taste.

When Max Gordon, doomed to be a teenager for the next thousand years, found himself standing above her dying body, he saw in her bright eyes something he hadn’t seen in the nearly one-hundred-years he’d spent roaming Earth. Her father was already dead, but there was a chance he could still save her from the wreck. Jane was her name, and she was only seven, but already she was all he ever wanted. It was his job to bring her back, but it was an act that could have been the biggest mistake of his life.

When four teens enter Glenwood High on an unseasonably cool day in September, no one but Max could understand the future that was ahead of them. Drawn together by blood and friendship, they each hide a dark secret that will soon help to bind them even closer.

When the one face Max hoped to never see again shows up on school grounds – his evil twin brother, Greg – he knows that coming back for Jane was the wrong thing to do. Finding that Greg already knows about Max’s attraction for Jane, Max finds he can no longer hope to leave again, afraid of what Greg will do.

Max has to protect Jane, Jane wants to be normal, Wes wants Jane to love him, and Emily just wants the voices to stop…

And Greg… he just wants everyone dead.

My Thoughts:  wow....now thats a synopsis/teaser!

Book Review: Voices of Dragons

Voices of Dragons by Carrie Vaughn: Book CoverVoices of Dragons by Carrie Vaughn
Release Date: March 2010
Publisher: HarperTeen
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages:320
My Rating/Overall:

Synopsis
On one side of the border lies the modern world: the internet, homecoming dances, cell phones. On the other side dwell the ancient monsters who spark humanity's deepest fears: dragons.

Seventeen-year-old Kay Wyatt knows she's breaking the law by rock climbing near the border, but she'd rather have an adventure than follow the rules. When the dragon Artegal unexpectedly saves her life, the rules are abruptly shattered, and a secret friendship grows between them.
But suspicion and terror are the legacy of human and dragon interactions, and the fragile truce that has maintained peace between the species is unraveling. As tensions mount and battles begin, Kay and Artegal are caught in the middle. Can their friendship change the course of a war?

In her young-adult debut, New York Times bestselling author Carrie Vaughn presents a distinctly twenty-first-century tale of myths and machines, and an alliance that crosses a seemingly unbridgeable divide.

My Thoughts:
Voices Of Dragons is adventurous and an exciting start to a new series!I've never really been into Dragons, but when i found out Carrie Vaughn was writing a YA novel i was like What?!? i love her adult series. So i decided i had to read this one.

The characters are a strong asset to this book. Kay is just your rebellious/daring teenage who just happens to accidentally crosses the border into Dragon she is met by the dragon Artegal. A friendship is born even though for Sixty years there has been a war between dragons and humans. The rivalry is just pointless and yet it could broke this power friendship that could change everything. You would thing a girl and a dragon wouldn't get along...ha! Her time with Artegal gave her a since of peace and even though it puts her in danger. Kay and Artegal must dig deeper into their friendship and do whatever it takes to stop the war. The relationships with her human friends and family are a little more different. Aside from keeping Artegal a sercet, Kay get sucked into a crazy ritual of High School dating involving the decision on whether she should give up her virginity to her boyfriend. On the one hand her best friend Tam thinks that if Kay just lets it happen than everything would be "strawberry smoothie". Yeah? crazy right?

In the end,Voices of Dragons was a good read! I enjoyed it for my first YA dragon story.I enjoyed Carrie's writing in the development of friendships/trust and making it believable and come alive. The characters are well crafted. The plot flowed, some parts were a bit iffy(the weird virginity ritual). The only thing wrong with this book is the ending. It ends rather with a "sitting on the edge of your seat"cliff-hanger. Carrie Vaughn will have to write another one!

Synopsis

THE TRANSFORMATION
Beth has always been “The Beast”—that's what everyone at school calls her because of her awkward height, facial scars, and thick glasses. Beth's only friend is geeky, golden-haired Scott. That is, until she's selected to be her choir's soprano soloist, and receives the makeover that will change her life forever.

THE LOVE AFFAIR
When Beth's choir travels to Switzerland, she meets Derek: pale, brooding, totally dreamy. Derek's untethered passion—for music, and for Beth—leaves her breathless. Because in Derek's eyes? She's not The Beast, she's The Beauty.

THE IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE
When Beth comes home, Scott, her best friend in the world, makes a confession that leaves her completely torn. Should she stand by sweet, steady Scott or follow the dangerous, intense new feelings she has for Derek?

THE HEARTBREAK
The closer Beth gets to Derek, the further away he seems. Then Beth discovers that Derek's been hiding a dark secret from her …one that could shatter everything.

My thoughts:

Sing Me To Sleep is an amazing story. The real message of this book comes in many shapes and sizes, love who you are and dream.

When i first heard about this book, I knew I wanted to read it. When i read the summary i immediately felt sorry for Beth. The kids would call her a "Beast" I was wondering how could a character like Beth overcome those "demons." this is one of the books that you can't hope but watch it bloom.

And Beth did bloom, In the beginning she always known herself to be "Damn Ugly or The Beast" that was her, But when she songs- she become this beauty person she has always been from the inside. I don't know how she dealt with the High School Bullies. I would have been suspended all the time. lol But Scott her Bff has always been there for her. Then we have Derek who is more like Beth than he is lead on to be. I was torn between the two. This book is a definite tear-jerker.

The relationship with Beth, Scott, and Derek, was very enjoyable to read. This love triangle was different from all the others. Beth has been friends with Scott, when she got the fabulous make over it didn't matter to Scott, seeing he always loved her for her. She goes on a trip for Choir and meets Derek, who has been obsessed with her ever since he heard her sing. When they finally meet the love just grown from there. When it came the the love triangle aspect i think Scott represented the past, her school life, just what she grown up to be. With Derek she could start over and not be this "Beast" he saw her for what she wanted to be.

I couldn't have read should an awesome book without Angela writing it! It was my favorite part of this book. Her writing just flowed. I'll  be reading more of her work.

Random: Love Triangles?

LoveTriangles.jpg Love Triangles image by witch1000

O.k. so love triangles, we all know how this goes, the new hot guy comes to town and the girl always falls for him. The guy best friend is totally in love with this girl, he gets to watch the girl he loves ride into the sunset with Mr.Prince Charming...or something like that.

I remember writing a review expressing those feelings about a character and someone said  "that means he's all yours" true, but all I'm thinking is poor guy... what about his happily ever after.

Love triangles make the book fun and interesting, but I'm wandering if I'm the only one thinking about this*i hope not* What if it was the other way around? yeah, now there's something to think about....Take Katniss ,Gale, and Peeta for example.

I what to hear your thoughts, What do you think? How come the BF never gets chosen? What are some books that involve love triangles?

Synopsis

As if being a purrfect cheerleader isn't enough responsibility! Tessa Crimson's the sweet and spunky leader of the SOS (Society of Smitten Kittens), a cheer squad–turned–spy society dedicated to bringing dastardly boyfriends to justice, one cheater at a time. Boyfriend-busting wouldn't be so bad . . . except that so far, every suspect on the Naughty List has been proven 100% guilty!

When Tessa's own boyfriend shows up on the List, she turns her sleuthing skills on him. Is Aiden just as naughty as all the rest, or will Tessa's sneaky ways end in catastrophe?
The Naughty List. Is your boyfriend on it?

My Thoughts:

The Naughty list is defintly naughty! fun, and a great read! I loved the book from the start. It was just full of personality and very addicting.

O.k. who would have thought cheerleaders could be FBI material. Seriously..cheaters beware the Smitten Kittens know everything. The plot, seems predictable, definitely had me on the edge of my sit.

All the characters made a home in my heart except
Chloe I didn't like her*evil mean girl!*. Other than her the rest were great! Tessa, she is adorable but you should still take her seriously! even if she says“apple dippers” but i least she doesn't curse. The story behind Tessa's goodie-goodie exterior. She definitely has her "rocks" to support her especially the sweet BF Kira and the dream boyfriend Aidan.I loved Tessa and Aidan’s relationship, cute and just totally in love.I didn't like how it turn out but i hope for the best.

The writing is fantastic and the story is uniquely woven together. I loved Young's writing, great personality. This is one of those story's that you can't forget and just smile about after reading it.I liked the little pages where it would show a cheater report. It was kind of depressing to find out like 99% of the guys cheated! crazy i know.

The Naughty List, you should definitely read it! I can not wait to read the rest of the series!
I need the sequel, SO MANY BOYS..!

Grace Grace by Elizabeth Scott

A fable of a terrifying near future by critically acclaimed author Elizabeth Scott.

Grace was raised to be an Angel, a herald of death by suicide bomb. But she refuses to die for the cause, and now Grace is on the run, daring to dream of freedom. In search of a border she may never reach, she travels among malevolent soldiers on a decrepit train crawling through the desert. Accompanied by the mysterious Kerr, Grace struggles to be invisible, but the fear of discovery looms large as she recalls the history and events that delivered her uncertain fate.

Told in spare, powerful prose, this tale of a dystopian near future will haunt readers long after they've reached the final page.

My thoughts: Anything Elizabeth Scott and I'm SOLD. This book sound different from all the other ones she's wrote, doesn't it?
