Inspired by the beloved classic The Little Mermaid, THE MERMAID'S PENDANT is a modern fairy tale about growing up and discovering who you are -- and what you believe in. At times lyrical, this novel is a fantastic journey filled with magic, myth, romance, and adventure. Four years after John Wilkerson claims the mermaid Tamarind for his wife, they have an idyllic marriage that depends on a talisman that she crafted on their island paradise. But Tamarind learns a painful truth: it takes more than legs to live on land and more than magic to sustain a bond. When the talisman breaks, she and John are forced to rely on themselves instead of magic. Three wise women play key roles in the young lovers' journey to mature love. Ana, Tamarind's aging mentor, casts spells and performs seductions to keep the lovers apart. Valerie, an ex-pat jewelry maker cum fairy godmother, works her own magic to bring them together. Lucy, their widowed neighbor, grounds the couple in the realities of marriage, parenting, and family. THE MERMAID'S PENDANT is a story for anyone who has ever believed in the transforming power of love.

My Thoughts:
“Inspired by the beloved classic The Little Mermaid, THE MERMAID’S PENDANT is a modern fairy tale about growing up and discovering who you are—and what you believe in.” such a great tag line, I loved Disney's Little Mermaid, I thought it would be interesting to see the growing up side to this tale. However, this book is like 500 pages long so it was kind of lengthy, personally i would have like it to have been shorter but i have to give it to Reilly, she did create a good story.
She creates modern fairy tale that takes the reader to the journey of after happily-ever-after and a realistic one at that. One that can't depend on a fairy god mother or magic to keep the love, faith, and family going. I was completely drawn to the characters,Tamarind and John. They were well developed and strong together and that's what I enjoyed about most about these book, its what keep me going(especially Tamarind she was such a breathe of fresh air!)
All in all, i really liked this book, it was a little slow paced at times. But with the characters, mermaids, romance, and the writing I enjoyed it nonetheless. I'm looking forward to reading more of Reilly's books. She's definitely caught my interest with a beautiful story.
Also this book has F bombs and sexual situations.

Great review. I loved the Little Mermaid when I was younger and this book sounds really nice. Though it is very thick! :)
ReplyDeleteFaye,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the insightful review. I hadn't thought a teen bookworm would enjoy my book, especially since it is so long, so I'm thrilled that you gave it a chance.
Great review. I would have considered this one more of an adult book than YA because it deals with adult issues. I agree with you, I really enjoyed Tamarind!
