Today, I have Inara Scott here to talk about Her new YA Debut novel The Candidates (Delcroix Academy #1) which has already hit bookshelves!

About Inara
Inara Scott grew up in winter wonderland of Buffalo, NY. Consequently, she spent much of her childhood complaining about being cold. To spare the world her whining, she fled the cold climate and eventually wound up in the Pacific NW, where the old Douglas Fir trees and thick ferns make you think you’ve wandered into a fairy tale. Inara loves to hike, canoe, and play outside. She is addicted to yoga. Despite being a writer, Inara fears deep, intellectual books, loves romance and fantasy, and listens to cheesy, happy music. The Delcroix Academy, Book One: The Candidates is Inara Scott’s first novel. She lives in Portland with her husband and children.

Your own six-word memoir.
She loved deeply, believed in grace.

What is your favorite cheesy happy song(or band)?
All my favorite songs and bands are happy and cheesy. It's a way of life for me. My current favorite band is the Zac Brown Band, and favorite song is Chicken Fried. I also adore Taylor Swift.

Do you listen to music while you write or...?
If I listen to music while I'm writing I tend to start singing along, and then can't write. LOL. When I need something in my ears (usually to distract me when I'm in a loud coffeeshop), I have a couple of French artists I listen to -- Thomas Dutronc and Benabar. Their songs have words, but they're in French, so they don't distract me. :-)

The Candidates (Delcroix Academy, #1)The  cover of The Candidates is GORGEOUS! What did you think the first time you saw it?
The first thing I thought -- I ADORE THIS COVER. Then I burst into tears of joy.

What influences and inspirations (both literary and non-literary) did you draw from while writing The Candidates?
As I was writing Delcroix, the war in Iraq was going sideways and we began hearing more about government surveillance. Those events definitely influenced the story, though I certainly wouldn't say the book is about politics. Other than that, I've spent a lifetime reading adult romance and fantasy novels, and they have definitely influenced my writing. I am always inspired by Meg Cabot. I read her Mediator series right before I began writing Delcroix, and I loved it so much, I had to try writing a young adult story myself.

Thanks Inara for stopping by! :D

  1. Hehe, I tend to sing along to music too, when I write, so now I've resorted to piano melodies and Bach.
Great interview, I enjoyed all the answers!

  2. Thanks Kirthi! I'm amazed people can write to music with words. They are clearly MUCH more focused than I am! :-)

  3. I can write to instrumentals and foreign music...but not to regular English stuff. Being able to understand it is distracting. O.o
